Introduction
Nowdays most students are interested in
instructional technology for their learning process. The teachers need a new
innovation and interesting atmosphere in order to build their students’enthusiasm
in studying English especially grammar. Therefore, the writer chose one of the
new innovations in grammar teaching by using English Grammar application in order to attract the students’ interested and make
them feel enthusiastic to learn grammar.
2. Context
Teaching English Grammar at 3rd
grade of SMA wich followed by 25 students intermediate level. The contextual
problems appear from the strategies in teaching and learning Grammar are often
frustrated by the disconnect between knowing the rules of grammar and being
able to apply those rules automatically in listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. This complexity may cause the students feel confused and hard to
really understand about English grammar, moreover the teacher always explains
the lesson conventionally throught a textbook only. This condition makes the
students not interested and become unmotivated to study English especially
grammar. To solve this problem, This essay will explain the appropriate
technology for teaching grammar.
Firstly, this essay will discuss what grammar exactly based
on the expert. Hornby in Advanced Learner’s
Dictionary of Current English states that grammar is the study of form of
word and how they are put together in sentences; the rules about the use of
words, as to study English grammar, a grammar lesson and mistakes in grammar (
1957 : 543 ). It is possible to communicate in speech and in writing without
knowledge of grammar (Burton, 1982; 128). Yet we are still bothered with
grammar because knowledge of grammar is a
handy tool. Studying grammar gives the benefits and by studying grammar
the students would learn to make up
language and be able to apply what they have learned as better speakers,
writers and readers.
Beside , In the communicative competence model, the
purpose of learning grammar is to learn the language of which the grammar is a
part. Instructors therefore teach grammar forms and structures in relation to
meaning and use for the specific communication tasks that students need to
complete.
3. Technology
English
Grammar Application produced by Nitra.education,
the technology applying for teaching grammar, is an program or application that
has been widely used by the designer to produce professional designs. Among the
programs of animation quize. This application is the most flexible and useful
program for teaching grammar, both interactive animation and non-interactive animation.
This application is interesting for the designers to express their ideas into
a motion and visual animation. Beside, It is one of the best offline application to
build up students motivation and interested in learning grammar which provided
an interesting contents, such as Lesson, Practice, Test Level, and Study Plan.
Inside of the lesson, there are 21 grammar materials which following the number
of practice session. In addition to Test Level, there are several contents also
as follow General Test, Random Q&A, Daily Test, Online Test and Result are
available for utilize everytime. On application, the General Test supply ten of
questions, different from Random Q&A and Daily test, it has some questions
and time in every session. Beside, Online Test provides a lot of questions with
each level. Here the students learn grammar from the easy level to the hard
level. It aims to give a good mastery of English grammar to students because English is included in
four subjects examined in the national examination for both junior or senior
high school. However learning English needs a process, especially for the Indonesian students because English is a
foreign language for them. Students must
know and learn about grammar which has many rules and it should be reffered to the mechanism on how to use
English grammar. The Last content on application is provide Result session
which concluding all of students scores
as long as they do the various test in
the class regarding to the instruction from their teacher. This content will
show the students’ ability in enhance all of grammar materials when learning
process conducted. As a result, this application can help the teacher to teach
grammar, for example to explain English tenses with more complex patterns. By
using this program, the teacher can use new innovation that is not boring, so
the students will be motivated to learn English.
4. Pedagogy
The instructional approach
or theory of teaching is applying CALL (
Computer Assisted Language Learning ). Wyatt ( 1984 ) states that Computer
Assisted Language Learning ( CALL ) is the term used to emphasize the whole
range of possible roles that the computer can play. It is developing rapidly in
line with the advancement of technology and with the widespread use of computer
at home and in school because this application is available use in computer,
laptop or handphone.
In
the material development, The procedure is that the teachers started applying
English Grammar Application in grammar teaching based on the learners’ needs to
master English grammar, but not apart from the curriculum guide book. The
teachers only give a brief explanation using a textbook and students may open
the application to learn another simple and clear explanation with the
following exercise. Hence, the students can assesst their abilities and
understanding in every material at that time.
5. Justification
( Esti, Nurani. 2009) state that The developed material makes mastering
English grammar enjoyable and easier because the application is packaged in
fun, attractive, interactive and interesting way for learning. From this
sentences prove that by using this application can help students in mastering
grammar. Another, The developed materials are considered
as interesting and innovative teaching tools for grammar teaching students of senior high school (academia, edu.).
In
conclusion, the English Grammar
application
is a tool which can be used to make kinds of fantastic quize, presentation,
game, even as an interactive and dynamic teaching tool. the purpose of using English Grammar Application produced by Nitra.Educaton is to build up
students interested and motivation in learning grammar and to help
teachers in teaching effectively. The
designed materials also are well developed. In addition , the developed
material can solve the students difficulties in mastering English grammar.
